This honest and raw film delves into the tumultuous life story of a poor, working-class boy from the streets of a hardened council estate in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, 1969.

Exploring universal and relatable themes on humanity, the power of love, happiness, laughter, great friendships and dreams, inextricably intertwined with dysfunctional family dynamics, tragedy, geographical identity, abuse, mental health issues and financial hardship.

As a young boy Cornelius dreamed of leaving Grangetown, and fortuitously for Cornelius The Grangetown Boxing Club became his salvation, his love and his purpose. Against all odds, it propelled Cornelius Carr onwards to become the British Super-Middleweight Champion (1994) and the World Middleweight Champion (1999), the first fighter from Middlesbrough to reach such lofty heights in over eighty years. However, success always came at a price for Cornelius and on his journey to the top of his sport, life would often tragically remind him that not every battle can be fought with a fist.

SYNOPOSIS

Unexpected Beginnings and Rising Challenges

The streets of Grangetown were a harsh training ground, but it was here that Cornelius’s boxing potential was first spotted by Marty, a seasoned trainer. After intervening in a street brawl, Marty insisted Cornelius join his boxing club or face consequences at home.

The Grangetown Boxing Club became more than just a training ground; it was where Cornelius forged his determination and focus. Here began the ascent that would eventually lead him to national and global boxing titles. His life was a complex tapestry of personal victories and societal struggles, shaped by early experiences of illness and family turmoil. Despite these challenges, Cornelius persevered, overcoming significant adversities during his formative years.

A Rocky Journey to Professional Triumphs

Entering the professional boxing scene at eighteen under the management of Frank Warren marked a new phase in Cornelius’s life, fraught with neglect and unfulfilled promises. Feeling overlooked, he ventured to America with high hopes of conquering new arenas but found the reality harsh and unrewarding.

The American stint was marked by low pay and less-than-stellar bouts, including a notorious fight in Angola Prison. Returning to the UK more disheartened than ever, Cornelius faced a crossroads. His renewed commitment to the sport, however, spurred a remarkable turnaround, leading to unprecedented success that once seemed out of reach.
